Melothria scabra is commonly referred to as cucamelon, Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour cucumber, Mexican sour gherkin, mouse melon, or pepquinos. They have a citrusy flavor that goes well with salads or eaten on their own. The plant grows long vines that are well suited for a trellis. From the vines, small cucumbers that look like baby watermelons will emerge. The melons will grow to be 1 to 2 inches long but are best harvested when they are approximately 1 inch in length. The plant is an avid producer.
